Meeting Minutes

January 16, 2008 2:00 P.M.

Attendees:  Kari Back, Robert Carrier, Archie Hoard, Michelle Jones, Tarah Kile, Caren Pankow, Kenitha Severn, Eldon Sprague, Cheri Umbarger, Ed VanAvery

Ed VanAvery conducted the meeting for the last time.  He welcomed all in attendance.

Minutes from December 5, 2007 were reviewed and approved.  No comments or changes were made.

Ed welcomed the new officers again, and Michelle Jones officially accepted the position of Treasurer.  Ed now moves up to the Senior Advisory Board.

New Business:

Ed agreed to assume responsibility for the MMSC website.  He will work to keep it updated, and he expressed the desire to bring in new information, particularly information for training purposes and to allow people to see what events may be taking place from month to month.

The council discussed looking at areas for potential satellite chapters.  Cadillac, Gaylord, Greenville, Midland, Isabella, Clare, and possibly Gratiot County (if meetings could take place in Mt. Pleasant) were a few mentioned.  These chapters could meet on a bi-monthly basis, and the question was raised as to whether these groups would have their own officers, but Ed stated a Chairperson for each group would probably be necessary.  The issue of funding was discussed; however, the MMSC Harrison would act as the umbrella organization.  Ed suggested conducting a fact-finding survey of the areas to determine what type of industry/companies are located there, and what needs they may have.  MMSC could help develop safety trainings if there proves to be a need.

Tarah Kile stated that Great Lakes could potentially assist with future education and safety training by providing classrooms.

Round Table:

Bob Carrier stated that the Advisory Board would be meeting soon in the Mt. Pleasant area.  He passed around the MIOSHA Newsletter, a brochure on an upcoming ventilation conference, and gave each member a machine safety checklist.

Bob will be presenting on Ergonomics in February for MMSC members.  Tarah Kile offered to give members a tour of the Great Lakes Safety Training Center therefore, February’s MMSC meeting will take place there on the 20th with Bob presenting afterward.  She offered to email Kari Back directions for everyone and Kari was to forward them to all members.

Ed stated that speakers and topics for the MMSC 2008 Safety Expo should be set by the end of March, first part of April.  Once this is done, MMSC can begin promoting and advertising for the event, and it is believed that more money needs to be spent in this area.  Ed will contact MSUE regarding the possibility of holding a pesticide applicator renewal license class.  It was suggested that MSUE could possibly assist in advertising and promoting the Expo.  Ed would like to see classes that offer CEU’s and Train the Trainer.  He believes it could draw in more attendees.  Tarah asked about the Expo’s fees, and Ed stated the cost for attendance last year was $35.  He explained that there were 4 different breakout sessions; 2 in the A.M., a break for lunch, 2 in the P.M., with approximately 6-8 different topics for each breakout session.  Ed stated the average attendance for previous expos has been approximately 70 participants.  Kari suggested training specifically for supervisors and/or maintenance workers held in the form of “Safety Paths” which might offer classes more pertinent to their positions.  It was also suggested that classes for general public safety be offered.

Archie Hoard inquired as to whether CPR might be offered.

August 6, 2008 was the date agreed upon for this year’s Expo.

Kari passed around her company’s information brochure and discussed lift tables and on site consultation services.

Ed demonstrated MMCC’s online safety training through Clarity Net Courses.

Meeting adjourned at 4:00 P.M.

Next Meeting:  February 20, 2008, 2:00 P.M. at the Great Lakes Safety Training Center in Midland.
