  • Supervisor Responsibilities & Safety/MIOSHA Training Requirements

    • Bob Carrier was appointed to the MIOSHA Consultation Education and Training Division in 1989 as a consultant specializing in general industry standards in the mid-Michigan area.  Bob brings with him his previous experience as the Safety Administrator at Allied Signal Aerospace Company.  His experience includes safety program development, safety training, and workers’ compensation administration.  Bob recently chaired the Division Plastics Committee where updated training was developed for the industry.   

      A graduate of Ferris State University with a B.A. degree in Occupational Safety and Health, and a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers, Bob offers a diversified background in safety training and consultation services.

    • Topic Overview: This session will discuss the concept of insurance, types of business insurance, insurance companies, key people in an insurance company or independent agency, workers comp requirements, types of workers comp insurance, most common experience rating system, how an effective safety program can reduce cost of insurance, services that can be provided to assist any company, the "Hidden Factor" of insured attitude towards safety and insurance.

    • Topic Speaker: James Varga, Senior Safety Management Specialist, Selective Insurance

    • James Varga has been in the insurance industry with various Safety /Loss Control titles since 1977.  He has been with Selective Insurance for 6 years servicing the Eastern half of Michigan.  Prior to this job he worked for Mitsui/Sumitomo Marine covering the Midwest for 15 years. He is considered a generalist providing service to all lines of insurance coverage.  James is a CSP (Certified Safety Professional) and a CPSM (Certified Product Safety Manager)

  • Accident Investigation

    • Topic Overview: This session will discuss the processes for reporting and preventing accidents and near-misses.  Some of the issues discusses will be types of accidents and near-misses, reporting procedures, recognize the need for an investigation, investigating the scene of an accident, interviewing procedures compiling data to prepare a report, determining root cause, and creating action plans for prevention.

    • Topic Speaker: Teresa Schwartz, EH&S Specialist, Renosol Seating Inc. & Derek Bujak, Renosol Seating Inc.

    • Teresa has worked as an EH&S Specialist at Renosol Seating Inc. for the past 2 years.  She has received a Bachelor Degree in EHSM from Ferris State University, also an Associates Degree in Environmental Technology and a Chemical Processing Certificate from Delta College.

    • Topic Speaker: Heidi Saunders, Brady Corp.

 

  • Ladder Safety

    • Overview: This course is intended to familiarize individuals with regulatory requirements for the installation and use of fixed and portable ladders. Individuals will review the minimum requirements for the construction, care, and use of common types of ladders in order to insure safety under normal conditions of usage. Types I, II and III will be covered as well as their inspection and maintenance. Design considerations such as rung specifications, cleats, pitch as well as fastenings, load requirements and design stresses will also be covered.

    • Topic Speaker:  Sue Kesterson from FRG Corp.  www.frgcorp.com

    • Sue has a background in operations management and education. Her work experience has required effective communication with, and through people, at all levels and has encompassed the planning, organization, development, implementation, and supervision of complex programs and special projects. She is a certified American Red Cross and American Safety and Health Institute instructor, and instructor trainer, in Workplace Safety Training (includes CPR/AED, First Aid and Bloodborne Pathogens) and is a State certified instructor for asbestos abatement contractor/supervisor training. Sue also provides technical training in a large number of OSHA (MIOSHA) related topics.  Sue is a member of the American Society for Training and Development, is a volunteer for the American Red Cross, and has done volunteer work for the Special Olympics. She has a personal dedication to customer satisfaction, performance based training, and her clients return on investment.

  • Fire Extinguisher Training (Option 1)

    • Overview: This course is designed to familiarize individuals with portable fire extinguishers and their use in fire protections. Types of fires, extinguisher classifications, general principles of fire extinguisher use, extinguisher limitations, and the hazards associated with incipient stage fire fighting are covered. Individuals also review and discuss methods of notification, and risk assessments that evaluate fire size, evacuation path, and the atmosphere in the vicinity of the fire.

  • Emergency Preparedness: (Option 1)

    • Topic Speaker: Jon Kujat, Central Michigan University

 

  • Initial Red Cross First Aid (Option 2) 2- A.M. Sessions Required (Additional $5.00 fee for Red Cross Certification Card Required)

    • First Aid and Preparedness
      Streamlined to fit into busy work schedules, this interactive presentation is ideal for employees who want to learn lifesaving skills, but do not need to receive certification to meet OSHA regulations. A 90-minute session is packed with information to help employees stay prepared with valuable lifesaving skills.

    • Topic Trainer: Gregg Grobbel  , Great Lakes Safety Training Center

      • Gregg Grobbel is involved at Great Lakes as a part-time instructor.  He is currently and has been for 18 years a full-time firefighter and emergency medical technician.  Gregg was raised and trained in the Mid-Michigan area and serves the community in various ways including: National Ski Patrol,  High School Baseball official, Shop with a Hero Program, Bay Sail program and as a Community Red Cross Instructor. 

     

  • Haz-Woper:

    • Cindy L. Zastrow was appointed to the MIOSHA Consultation Education and Training Division in 2004 as an Industrial Hygienist, bringing with her over 11 years of experience in Safety, Health, and Emergency Services.  Based near Saginaw, Cindy provides industrial hygiene services for the northern part of Michigan as well as the Upper Peninsula.

      Cindy has her B.S. and B.F.A. degrees from Central Michigan University, and her M.S. degree in Forensic Toxicology from the University of Florida.  She is also a certified Firefighter I and II, licensed EMT, HAZMAT Technician, NFPA Fire Inspector I, CPR/First Aid/AED Instructor, and Medico Legal Death Investigator.  Cindy is a member of the Federal DMORT-WMD team, as well as serving on the Richland Twp. Fire Department.

Train-the-Trainer Series

Individuals completing these courses will receive their T-T-T certificate that day!

  • Training the "Trainer", Passed Out Granny "How to be an Effective Speaker":

    • Overview: "Passed Out Granny": Teach your trainers how to "keep them awake" even when the subject matter is dull, dry, uninteresting, boring and just plain not what your employees want to spend their time learning.  This 1-hour presentation will be taught by a seasoned training professional, Jon Kujat, a presenter who has logged hundreds of hours teaching such wildly interesting topics as asbestos awareness and lock out/tag out. As the Environmental & Safety Services and Emergency Management Coordinator at Central Michigan University, Jon trains employees and faculty almost daily on life-saving topics. While the information he presents is vitally important to the health and safety of his audiences (with many presentations even mandated by the government), the topics he speaks on are NOT generally ones that employees and faculty are clamoring to hear. To make his information memorable, over the last 12 years Jon has developed "tricks of the trade," which he now shares throughout the country with trainers and those with emerging training responsibilities.

    • Topic Trainer: Jon Kujat, CMU

    • Mr. Kujat has been employed by Central Michigan University for the past thirteen years as its Environmental & Safety Services Coordinator as well as Emergency Management Coordinator.  He has worked in a variety of industries such as warehousing, distribution & transportation, consulting, education and automotive.  In these functions he has trained an average of 2,500 employees over the past ten years on a variety of topics.  He has been invited to present the past two years at the Michigan Safety Conference and is an annual presenter at the Mid Michigan Safety Expo.  He is a Certified Safety and Health Manager and holds a Masters degree in Industrial Management and Technology from Central Michigan University.  Mr. Kujat is the author of Fleet Safety Made Easy: A Simplified Approach to Safety and Accident Prevention and A Comparison of Popular Remediation Technologies of Petroleum Contaminated Soils for Leaking Underground Storage Tanks.  He is a Lieutenant with the Shepherd Tri-Township Fire Department and the Assistant Chief of the Isabella County Hazardous Materials Response Team. 

  • Aerial Lift Devices:

    • Overview: MIOSHA approved training for individuals wishing to perform Aerial Lift training at their workplace.

    • Topic Trainer: Mike McKay, Safety Coordinator, Ferris State University

    • Michael McKay, CSHM joined Ferris State University (FSU) in Big Rapids, Michigan as the Safety Coordinator in 2004.  His responsibilities include the University's Workers Compensation program, health and safety training, CDL/DOT drug testing, safety and health inspections, emergency management – EOC operations and the Material Safety Data Sheet electronic database system.  Michael’s experience includes ten years in the automotive industry as a Safety Specialist and Division EHS Manager in both union and non-union organizations.  He directed a US and Canadian staff of nine in providing safety and health training, inspections, fire safety and hazardous material management.  Additionally, as a Training Specialist he conducted asbestos, hazardous material, confined space and other safety and health training sessions for clients in the pharmaceutical, printing, education, and construction industries.  Michael earned his bachelor degree in Occupational Safety and Health Management from Grand Valley State University and is a Council of Engineering and Scientific Specialty Boards (CESB) accredited Certified Safety and Health Manager.

    • Overview: MIOSHA approved training for individuals wishing to perform forklift training at their workplace.

    • Overview: MIOSHA approved training for individuals wishing to perform Gantry Crane training at their workplace.

      • Satisfies yearly requirement (2-2hour sessions, AM & PM)

      • We are offering this same session once in the morning and once in the afternoon.

  • DEQ-Hazardous & Liquid Waste Inspections

    • Overview: This session will cover what to expect when a Hazardous Waste Inspector shows up for an inspection at your facility.  It will also cover Waste Management Regulations.

    • Topic Speaker: Trish Confer, DEQ - Waste and Hazardous Material Division

    • Trish Confer (formerly Trish Peters), is currently serving as a Hazardous Waste Inspector in the Saginaw Bay District of the Michigan Dept of Environmental Quality (DEQ) in the Waste and Hazardous Material Division.  She has also worked as a project manager in numerous hazardous and waste materials operations for the past 12 years.  Trish holds a Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Conservation and a Minor in Biology from Northern Michigan University.

  • DEQ-Air Quality Inspection

    • Overview: This session will cover what to expect when an Air Quality Inspector shows up for an inspection at your facility.  It will also cover some of the Air Regulations and open burning regulations.

    • Topic Speaker: Kathy Brewer, DEQ, Air Quality Inspector

    • Kathy Brewer is currently serving as an Air Quality inspector in the Saginaw Bay District of the Michigan Dept of Environmental Quality (DEQ). In addition to conducting site inspections, she writes permits, responds to citizen complaints, releases of pollution, and, negotiates compliance schedules after violations are found.  She was originally hired into the Water Quality Bureau of the DEQ in 1990 where she worked until 2005. Kathy holds a Bachelor's Degree in Biology from Michigan State University.

One or all session topics may be cancelled/replaced at the discretion of the Mid Michigan Safety Council at any time.  If all sessions are cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, all registered attendees will receive a refund if applicable.

The Mid Michigan Safety Council (MMSC) is a non-profit organization made up of safety professionals dedicated to promote understanding of Occupational Safety and Health awareness and application of safety behaviors through improved safety practices. The MMSC is also involved in promoting general safety practices to the general public through sponsorship of numerous training seminars/activities structured for all family members in the Mid Michigan Area.
